Green Trucking ? Keeping the Economy Moving

There's no two ways about it ? the truck drivers of the UK are essential to keeping our economy on the move. As the UK heads out of recession, the importance of supplying goods to every part of the country in both new and used trucks has never been so vital. But in these tough times, it's also more important than ever to keep fuel costs to a minimum. Here is a look at how truckers adopt green driving techniques.

Training

By far the most influential factor in fuel-efficient driving is effective training. Studies have shown that drivers who have undertaken eco- or green-driving training courses can actually reduce the amount of fuel their vehicles consume by as much as 22% - that averages out at around 1,600 each year per driver. Imagine the cost savings if every trucker in the UK were to use these methods!

Courses typically include tips on how to reduce fuel consumption by teaching truckers the techniques they need to avoid hard acceleration, excessive breaking and tight cornering as well as the best ways to maintain a constant speed ? all of which contribute to higher fuel bills as well as increased levels of personal stress. Other benefits of eco-friendly driver training include the reduction in the number of accidents, which is of benefit both to the driver and to the company's insurance bill.

There are even apps available for smartphones and tablets which use a simulation program to provide driver training without the need to actually drive new or used trucks. It's a similar idea to pilot training simulators or those used for learner drivers and it encourages the trainees to practise their anticipation skills in different road conditions within a specific time frame. It's hoped that these learned behaviours will contribute towards a reduction in fuel consumption and therefore maximise efficiency. http://www.mascus.co.uk
